The BJP on Wednesday intensified its attack on the UPA over the 2G issue but rejected Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs contention that the Opposition was trying to destabilise his government, saying any collapse of the ruling regime would take place only due to the weight of its own contradictions.
Significantly, the party also sought to drive a wedge between the Congress and its allies, saying it has always resorted to differential treatment when it came to dealing with its own leaders and those of its partners in the ruling alliance.
In the sharpest attack so far,Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley did not mince words in laying the blame at the door of the Prime Minister on 2G,even dubbing Home Minister P Chidambaram as a tainted minister and demanding that heads should roll.
Whatever crime A Raja has committed, the same crime has been committed by Chidambaram also. But instead of taking action, the Prime Minister is protecting the Home Minister, Swaraj said, addressing a news conference jointly with Jaitley.
Jaitley rejected the contention that the Opposition was trying to destabilise the government. We dont have the numbers to destabilise. We dont even need to destabilise the government. It is collapsing under the weight of its own contradictions and its own liabilities, he said.
Swaraj added that the Prime Minister should save his house instead of blaming the Opposition. He should not heap all the blame for this on the Opposition and give a clean chit to his ministers. She said the BJP was only doing its job as an opposition party, cornering the government on the basis of revelations that had come out of reports and documents from the CAG and the RTI.
The two leaders said the Prime Minister, instead of taking action, was now living in denial. If the government is getting unstable, then it is because there is a crisis of leadership and credibility, Jaitley said.
They charged that the files leading to the Finance Ministry note on 2G spectrum allocation clearly showed he had full knowledge and was never in the dark on the issue.
Though they stopped short of indicting the Prime Minister, the two leaders maintained that the last word has not been said on 2G and the 2G saga is continuing.
The BJP also seized the opportunity to allege that the UPA was following a unique coalition dharma where leaders belonging to the allies were being considered guilty when surrounded by controversy but those belonging to Congress were sought to be protected.
