CPI(M) MP A P Abdullakutty is all set to learn it the hard way after he recently hailed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with the party reportedly mulling stern action against him.

The young MP from Kannur has had run-ins with the party on earlier occasions when he had spoken against bandhs and made controversial comments on faith but was let off after mere public censures. This time, however, the party seems to have made up his mind to cut short his free run.

The Kannur district committee has already sought an explanation from Abdullakutty for saying,at a function in Dubai, that Modi should be made the model for attracting private investment — a statement that contradicts party’s stand. While the CPI(M) despises Modi for the post-Godhra riots and his strident Hindutva posture, the comrades also run down his model of development. The Gujarat unit of the party had been holding regular agitations against the BJP Government on one issue or the other.

Sources in the CPI(M) said “the party had been tolerating the rebellious MP so far because of the apprehension that any action against him could antagonise the minority votebank”.

“Now that he has hailed Modi,we don’t think even the Muslim community will be upset if we take action against him,” a senior leader said.

Abdullakutty, however, maintains that his praise for Modi was limited to his skills in attracting private investment and ushering in development in the state and he still considers the Gujarat Chief Minister as a “communal fascist” and criticises his “anti-minority” attitude. This argument, however, doesn’t seem to have not cut much ice with the party.
