The Congress on Thursday rubbished the Oppositions allegations against Home Minister P Chidambaram, asserting that his ministry had no role in the withdrawal of FIRs against a Delhi-based hotelier and,in fact, the ministry has no powers to withdraw them.
It is very surprising that a party in which there are so many lawyers has adopted such an attitude as if it has no awareness of the dignity of the legal profession. Anybody who has a nodding acquaintance with the legal profession would know that a senior counsel is rarely briefed by the clients, Congress spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.
Therefore, the apparent conflict of interest that is made out to be is like raising a ghost, slaying it and calling yourself a Superman, he added.
At times, the conflict of interest is created for creating an issue. As I understand, the Union Home Ministry does not have the powers to withdraw a case8230;. It is with the government of Delhi and in fact, the Lt. Governor. There is a settled law that even if the government so desires to withdraw a case, the concerned magistrate has to apply his mind and come to a reasoned conclusion, said Tewari.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla said that the Oppositions allegations against Chidambaram are one-sided. He accused the BJP of hiding Law Ministrys opinion.
Whatever has been done was done as per the Law Ministry directive and Home Ministry has no role. Everyday the Opposition is disrupting the House on some pretext or the other. It has become a tamasha drama, said Shukla.
