Cong re-nominates Shukla,Deshmukh,Singhvi for RS

While Deshmukh and Shukla were renominated from Maharashtra,Singhvi was renominated from Rajasthan.

The Congress on Saturday re-nominated Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh,Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla and party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

While Deshmukh and Shukla were renominated from Maharashtra,Singhvi was renominated from Rajasthan. Narendra Budania was also renominated from Rajasthan.

The Congress had been planning to field a candidate from West Bengal, but has been forced to weigh its options as the Trinamool Congress is nominating candidates for the four seats that the ruling combine could win.

As the Congress is short of seven MLAs to send its nominee to the RS in case of a fourth candidate as opposed to the TMC,which is short of 11 AICC in-charge of Bengal Shakeel Ahmed had earlier met Mamata Banerjee to try get her support. However, the TMC chief gave no such assurance and the party later declared candidates for all four seats. Defending her decision,Mamata said in Kolkata that the TMC had given a seat to the Congress in an earlier RS election, and so the Congress was expected to back it this time round.

For the lone RS seat from Uttarakhand, the Congress has not been able to decide its nominee due to the rebellion led by Harish Rawat, who has the support of 17 MLAs.
