Cong alone could not have toppled Left: Mamata

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee fired fresh salvo at her alliance partner, claiming that the Congress alone could never have brought about a change in the government in Bengal

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday fired fresh salvo at her alliance partner, claiming that the Congress alone could never have brought about a change in the government in Bengal.

During an interview with three Bengali news channels, she said: Had there been the Congress alone here, there would not have been any change in the government. It is the Trinamool that brought about the change. However,we are in an alliance and we want to maintain it though we have a two-third majority in the Assembly.

Barely a week ago,Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh had asserted that the Congress played a big role in removing the Left rule from the state.

In another sign of growing strains between the Trinamool and the Congress, the CM targeted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for not calling her up during the Singur agitation. During my fast on the Singur land issue, the PM did not call me,perhaps he did not want to annoy the CPM, she told the news channels.

Banerjee said the PM had promised to give Central funds for Bengals development, but the Centre has not rendered any financial assistance during the last eight months. But we are not beggars. People are watching everything and they will give the right answer at the right time, she said.

The Trinamool carried out its activities based on policies, she claimed, adding,That is why we have protested against issues such as the entry of FDI in retail and hike in petrol prices which directly affect people. But some Congress leaders of the state are working like the CPM.

Meanwhile,in Lucknow, the Congress refused to be drawn into a war of words with Banerjee. I assure her that if the PM and Pranab Mukherjee have made any commitments even before the elections to the people of Bengal,it will be implemented, said party spokesperson Rashid Alvi.
