Violent clashes erupted at several places as Kashmir shut down Saturday in response to Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelanis call for a two-day strike to protest the killing of five youth by the CRPF in Shopian.
Shopian was curfewed for the sixth consecutive day. In Srinagar and other major towns and villages,shops,schools and colleges remained shut and traffic mostly off the roads.
In Srinagar,Baramulla,Bandipora and Ganderbal,people took to the streets and clashed with police and CRPF personnel. The police said two protesters and 10 police and paramilitary men were injured.
Geelani had called the strike after terming as eyewash the governments decision to order an inquiry into the killings and replace CRPF at the Gagran camp.
The CRPF have alleged that all five men were militants,a claim disputed by the police as well as the residents of Shopian and the separatists.
