Arms dealer Abhishek Verma has told the CBI that ZTE Telecom India Pvt Ltd,a subsidiary of ZTE China, had approached him for resolving the visa issue of their employees in 2009. Verma claimed that he had assured them of helping in converting their business visas to work visas, but before he could strike a deal the matter was resolved by the government. In 2009,a circular was issued stating that Chinese employees working on business visas should go back.

Verma and his wife were earlier remanded in five-day custody by the CBI in connection with the case registered on the complaint of Union Minister Ajay Maken. The remand expired on Tuesday after which they were produced before a Delhi court. Maken had alleged that Verma misused his name and letterhead. The unsigned letter addressed to the PM was used to obtain favours for the employees of the Chinese firm. Vermas counsel Vijay Aggarwal said,The letter is unsigned, therefore no allegations of forgery can be invoked against my client.

Verma had allegedly demanded $ 1000 per person for the conversion and a total charge of $ 350,000 was fixed. The CBI is yet to establish any money trail between Vermas company Ganton and ZTE. Verma and his wife said that Ganton was associated with ZTE since 2003. Verma refused that he had forged Makens letterhead.
