A map of India in the brochure of a Chinese company which did not show portions of Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh as part of the countrys territory sparked a row on Thursday, leading to the Ministry of External Affairs asking the Chinese ambassador to rectify the map.
Chinese envoy Zhang Yan told the MEAs joint secretary Gautam Bambawale that the map will be rectified, sources said. Incidentally, this Chinese company Xinjiang-based TBEA on Thursday signed a pact for investing 400 million in Gujarat,in the presence of the visiting Xinjiang governor Nur Bekri and Commerce Minister Anand Sharma.
At a CII-organised function, where the visiting Xinjiang Governor made a pitch for attracting Indian investments, the company brochures were distributed. One of the brochures had a map on the cover, while another had a map inside both distorted.
After the function,a journalist asked the Chinese ambassador for his comments on the map. The envoy first said its a technical issue. When pressed for an answer,he reportedly asked the journalist to shut up. This led to an altercation between them.
Bambawale, who was also present at the event, took up the issue with the Chinese ambassador and conveyed his objections about the map. The envoy admitted that it was a mistake and he would have it rectified soon, sources said. The envoy also said that the document was a private company document.
Sources said the MEA had vetted the Xinjiang Commerce department chief Xia Guangtais presentation at the event, but had excluded the maps from the presentation.
