Islamabad: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake Thursday rocked many parts of northern and central Pakistan,leaving at least three persons injured in Peshawar city. The temblor,which occurred at around 11.30 am,was felt in Islamabad,Rawalpindi,Peshawar,Lahore,Muzaffarabad,Chitral and Malakand.The epicentre was located along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border,state-run radio reported. Tutu wins 1.7 mn Templeton Prize

LONDON: The John Templeton Foundation said it has awarded South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu one of the world8217;s leading religion prizes. The organisation said Tutu,81,is the winner of the 2013 Templeton Prize for his lifelong work in advancing spiritual principles. The honor comes with a 1.7 million award. He will receive the prize at a ceremony at the Guildhall in London on May 21. AP

Obama to give 5 pc of salary to Treasury

Washington: At a time when US is facing economic strain and automatic budgetary cuts is in place,President Barack Obama will return five per cent of his salary amounting to 20,000 to the Department of Treasury. Obama instructed his staff he wanted to do this when the sequester took effect, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday. PTI

Italian priest held for pilfering hospital cash

ROME: Italian police on Thursday arrested a priest Rev Franco Decaminada accused of pocketing 4 million euros 5.1mn from the coffers of the IDI dermatological hospital in Rome that he ran and helping run up 600 million euros in debts that forced the clinic into bankruptcy and prompted the Vatican to intervene. China reports fresh bird flu deaths,virus traced to pigeons

Beijing: Two more persons on Thursday died in China due to the H7N9 bird flu,taking the death toll from the new strain of avian influenza to five in the country even as officials traced the new deadly virus to pigeons in Shanghai.

Agricultural authorities said the infectious H7N9 avian flu virus has been detected from pigeon samples collected in Shanghai. The samples were collected at a marketplace in Songjiang District and tested H7N9 positive by the national avian flu reference laboratory,the Ministry of Agriculture said. PTI

Kaesong industrial complex blockade continues

SEOUL: For the second day,North Korea blocked South Koreans from crossing the border to enter a jointly operated industrial park,threatening the future of the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean cooperation. It also warned that it would pull out more than 53,000 North Korean workers from the joint factory park,located in Kaesong,if taunts from the South Korean news media continued. NYT

Norths Twitter,Flickr accounts hacked

SEOUL: Hackers apparently broke into at least two of North Koreas government-run online sites Thursday. A picture posted on the Norths Uriminzokkiri Flickr showed leader Kim Jong-Uns face with a pig-like snout and a drawing of Mickey Mouse on his chest. Tweets on the Norths Twitter account read Hacked followed by a link to North Korea-related websites. AP
