Three Britons jailed for murdering NRI

LONDON: Three Britons have been sentenced to a total of 50 years in jail for murdering an Indian-origin lab technician,Anthony Fernandes,in the latters London home in a cannabis-fuelled frenzy in July 2009. Jason Terry,16,was jailed for 13 years while Paul Maddix,44,was jailed for life with a minimum of 16 years in jail. Darren Listen,27,was jailed for life with a minimum sentence of 18 years.

Dane confesses to killing woman in Peru

LIMA: A young Dutch man linked to the mysterious disappearance of an American teenage girl in Aruba has confessed to the murder in Peru,the police said Tuesday. A police official said Joran Van der Sloot admitted he killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores,whose body was found in a Lima hotel room last week. Sloot,a poker aficionado,met her at a Casino and said he did not mean to kill her.

Four Chinese shot by N Korea guards

BEIJING: China said Tuesday four of its citizens have been killed in a firing by border guards of its close ally North Korea last week. On the morning of June 4 some residents of Dandong city of Liaoning Province were shot by DPRK Korea border guards on suspicion of crossing border for trade activities, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.

Yemen wont extradite al-Awlaki

SANA: Yemen would not hand over a US-born,al-Qaeda-linked cleric to the US if he is captured because its law bans extradition of citizens,an official said Tuesday. Yemens Islamic Affairs Minister Hamoud al-Hitar said Yemen is encouraging al-Awlaki to turn himself in,but if he is apprehended,he will not be extradited to the US.

Great Escape veteran Jack Harrison,97,dies

LONDON: Jack Harrison,who survived the Great Escape plot by Allied prisoners in a German prison in World War II,has died at age 97,family said. Harrison died Friday in Bishopton,Scotland. Harrison was unable to escape when the plot was discovered. Only three who escaped reached safety.

Cancer drug extends life of women patients: Study

LONDON: A drug called Tarceva can extend the life of many women with advanced lung cancer,Researchers at University College London claim. They carried out a trial of the drug and found it can reduce chances of dying by a quarter especially in women. Around half of 40,000 people lung cancer every year are considered too ill for chemotherapy. But giving them Tarceva once a day increased the numbers whose disease did not get worse over 12 months.

Seinfeld top grossing 30 minute show in history

NEW YORK: Since Seinfeld went off the air 12 years ago,the show about nothing has grossed 2.7 billion,according to Time Warner who owns the series. The New York Post reported that these figures made Seinfeld the most profitable 30 minutes in TV history.
