Karzai,White House escalate war of words
Kabul/Washington: A war of words between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the White House escalated on Monday,with Washington expressing frustration that an attempt to smooth over the feud had so far failed. Karzai said he stood by remarks from last week accusing the West of carrying out election fraud in Afghanistan,and appeared to sharpen the criticism still further by singling out the US specifically for blame. The White House said it was frustrated on behalf of the American public,and invoked the sacrifice made by families who send their loved ones off to fight.
Zardari calls for reforms to curb own powers
Islamabad: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari called on Monday for Parliament to approve reforms that will see him give up his main powers,while issuing a veiled warning to the judiciary not to overstep its authority. I call upon Parliament to pass the 18th Constitutional Amendment Bill without delay, Zardari said in an address to a joint session of Parliament.
Son helped kill South African supremacist
Ventersdorp: The mother of a 15-year-old murder suspect told Associated Press Television News on Monday that her son said he struck White supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche with an iron rod after the farmer refused to pay him. My son admitted that they did the killing, she said from her home in Tshing. She said she spoke to the teenager at Ventersdorp police station on Saturday after he turned himself in along with his accomplice,a 28-year-old farm worker. Terreblanche,69,was leader of the far-right Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging movement,which is demanding that the police bring out the two suspects.
Salvage team could take weeks on Barrier Reef
Brisbane: A salvage team could take weeks to remove a grounded coal-carrying from Australias Great Barrier Reef where it is leaking oil in a pristine marine environment,a state leader said on Monday. Authorities fear an oil spill will damage the worlds largest coral reef,which is off northeast Australia and listed as a World Heritage site. State Premier Anna Bligh said a salvage team had reached the 230 meter ship on Monday and were attempting to stabilise it.
Court martial team for Fonseka reconstituted
Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has reconstituted a second court martial panel to try Gen Sarath Fonseka on the issue of alleged illegal arms deal made during the last phase of the LTTE war,before which the former Army Chief has been directed to appear on Tuesday. President Rajapaksa,substituted a fresh convening order by nominating three new senior Army officers to the second Court Martial,expected to hear charges against General Sarath Fonseka,now in military custody,the Army said in a statement.
