HANOI: A dissident lawyer was sentenced to seven years in prison and another three years house arrest Monday for calling for an end to Vietnams government and its one-party system. Cu Huy Ha Vu was sentenced after a one-day trial in Hanoi.

UNITED NATIONS: A small passenger plane carrying UN staff members crashed Monday in Congo and broke into pieces,killing at least 10 people aboard,United Nations officials said. A UN peacekeeping source speaking on condition of anonymity said that the death toll could rise. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Israeli-Arab actor gunned down

JENIN: A well-known Arab Israeli actor,director and political activist was gunned down Monday in the West Bank town where he ran a drama school and community theater,Palestinian police said. Juliano Mer Khamis was shot five times by one or more militants,according to Jenin police chief Mohammed Tayyim. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
