Fresh violence in Karachi,toll up to 55
Karachi: Karachi was rocked by renewed violence after motorcycle borne gunmen opened fire in a market shooting down 12 people to take the toll of target killings upto 55 in the last five days. The attack in the citys biggest junk market for car spare parts took place late on Tuesday as the gunmen opened fire on passers by,killing 12 and wounding several. Around 31 were killed in different firing incidents since Tuesday,taking the toll to 55. As the clashes between ethnic Pashtuns and Mohajirs continued,PPP leader Nabil Gabol demanded that the army be called in to control law and order.
UK court awards Saudi prince 20-year term
LONDON: A British court sentenced Saudi prince Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Saud to at least 20 years in prison on Wednesday for beating and strangling one of his servants at a swank British hotel. Justice David Bean said: No one in this country is above the law8230; It would be wrong for me to sentence you either more severely or more leniently because of your membership of the Saudi royal family.
1.3 mn votes invalid: Afghan poll officials
KABUL: Almost a quarter of the 5.6 million votes cast in Afghanistans parliamentary election last month were invalid,election officials said on Wednesday,but they hailed the poll a success despite low turnout. Afghanistans Independent Election Commission IEC said 5.6 million votes had been cast,but that it had thrown out 1.3 million of them.
The IEC also said it had disqualified ballots collected from 2,543 of the 17,744 polling stations.
