Missing boy found dead in school toilet
BIJNOR: A nine-year-old boy,who was missing for the past four days,was found dead inside the toilet of a primary school here,the police said. The body of Abhay,a Class II student,was recovered from the toilet with his hands and legs tied; acid was thrown on the body but there were no injury marks. Abhay had gone missing on Wednesday while on his way to attend a religious function in Chandpur area of the district.
Mahatma statue vandalised in Lanka
COLOMBO: India has taken up with Sri Lanka the issue of vandalism of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the eastern town of Batticaloa and offered assistance in rebuilding it. The statue of Gandhi,along with those of Lord Baden Powell and two Tamil scholars,had been found damaged on Thursday,prompting the Sri Lankan government to order a probe. According to locals,the statue had been erected in 1960.
Five held for trying to bribe SP MLA
BADAUN: Five persons,including three ration shop owners,were arrested for allegedly trying to bribe SP MLA Abid Raza here on Saturday. An FIR under the Anti-Corruption Act has been registered against Anekpal,his brother Bhagwandas,Rakesh and two others after they were caught red-handed while trying to bribe the MLA. However,the arrested persons alleged that the MLA had demanded money and threatened them with cancellation of their shop licences.
Bihar: Girl,mother tonsured,paraded
NAWADA: A woman,Meera Devi,and her daughter were tonsured and paraded through Balupurva village in Nawada district after her son allegedly teased a girl,a police official said. Seeking to teach the woman a lesson for her sons alleged offence,some people tonsured Devi and her daughter Munni and then paraded them through the alleys of the village on Saturday. The victims have lodged a case against 12 people in this connection.
Tigress found dead in Corbett reserve
DEHRADUN: A tigress was found dead on Sunday morning in forests of Amsor in Corbett Tiger Reserve CTR,an official said. The carcass of nearly 11-year-old tigress was noticed by forest guards during their patrol in Bijrani range,said C K Kavidayal,Deputy Director of CTR. The preliminary examination of the wildcat suggests that it died of natural causes,he said.
Begin video-graphing deliveries: HC panel
CUTTACK: An Orissa High Court appointed committee has suggested that deliveries in the labour room be video-graphed and forensic test of footprints of newborns be made immediately after birth to avoid baby-swap claims. The suggestion came from an advocates committee appointed by the High Court,which visited the S C B Medical College Hospital on Saturday,where a woman has refused to accept a baby girl as her daughter.
Ulfa team Delhi-bound for talks today
GUWAHATI: A high-level pro-talks Ulfa delegation,led by chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa,left for New Delhi on Sunday to hold the second round of talks with the Centre to resolve the long-standing issues. The delegation is scheduled to meet Union Home Secretary R K Singh on Monday to review the progress of the talks and ensure that the process is expedited.
IIT-Madras student commits suicide
A 19-year-old student of IIT Madras committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room on Sunday,the police said. Kuldeep Yadav,hailing from UP,was a second year civil engineering student.
Students of the hostel,on noticing that Yadavs room didnt open since morning,broke open the room and found his body hanging from the ceiling fan,the police said. Yadav was taken to a private hospital,where he was declared brought dead.
The boys father,Yasodhar Singh,has been informed,the police said.
