NEW DELHI: Helped by conducive monsoon weather,the H1N1 virus killed 111 people and infected 1,038 in the country in the week starting September 13. The bad news,experts say,is that the situation is likely to worsen in the coming weeks. The virus has so far claimed 2,427 people in India. The Health Ministry said most of the deaths 42 and infections 191 were reported from Maharashtra. Gujarat lost 29 people to H1N1 and Madhya Pradesh 14. Of the new cases,313 were reported from Tamil Nadu,145 from Karnataka,143 from Rajasthan and 88 from Delhi.

Goa bypoll on October 18

NEW DELHI: The EC Monday announced that the bye-election to Valpoi Assembly seat in Goa,which fell vacant after the resignation of Vishwajit Rane,would be held on October 18. Rane,who was elected as an Independent in 2007 Assembly election after Congress denied him a ticket,had resigned in June to rejoin the Congress. According to the poll schedule,candidates can file their nominations till September 29. Votes will be counted on October 21.

TN postmen held for fleecing old,widows

CHENNAI: The CBI Monday arrested 11 Tamil Nadu postmen for fleecing the old and the invalid,demanding bribe for distributing pensions for widows,physically-handicapped and old. Sleuths of the CBIs Anti-Corruption Bureau raided West Manbalam and K K Nagar post offices in Chennai and seized Rs 13,945 from the postmen. They had received a tip-off that many postmen in were collecting Rs 20 to 40 from the pensioners for handing over the Rs 400 per month pension.
