Gujarat district on alert after terror threat
AHMEDABAD: An alert has been sounded and security cover increased in Kheda district after an anonymous letter threatening a terror attack at a temple on Independence Day was received,the police said on Sunday. The state-level Independence Day function is to be held in Kheda district this year. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi would be hoisting the tricolour on August 15 at Nadida,the district headquarters.
Manmohan calls on President
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday called on President Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan to discuss her recent visits to South Korea and Mongolia. In a meeting that lasted for 30 minutes,the two leaders also discussed the forthcoming Monsoon session of Parliament. They discussed about the just concluded State Visit of the President to the Republic of Korea and Mongolia and various other issues of national and international importance, a statement by the PMO said.
Maoists behead man in Orissa
PHULBANI: Suspected Maoists beheaded a man in Brahmanigaon area of Kandhamal district on Sunday,the police said. The headless body with blood splattered at the site was found near Saragudi village under the Brahmanigaon police limit,about 135 km from here,they said. Though the head was missing,the villagers identified the victim as Dakasa Majhi of the same village,they said, adding that the killing appeared to be the handiwork of Maoists,who are observing Martyrs Week since July 28.
FIR against 81 for fake notes
LUCKNOW: The Reserve Bank of India RBI has filed an FIR against 81 persons for submitting fake Indian currency notes with face value of Rs 46,800 in the bank,the police said here on Sunday. The complaint was lodged by Assistant General Manager,RBI Lucknow,Shalini Sachan. The FIR was lodged against those who came to the bank to exchange their old and torn currency notes with new ones,they said.
Nine die in lightning strikes in Jharkhand
MEDININAGAR: Nine persons were killed by lightning in Jharkhand in the past 24 hours,the police said on Sunday. A man and a woman were struck by lightning when they were at work in paddy fields at Patan and Rahela villages in Palamau district on Sunday. Two women died at Sidhi and Konmadra villages in Garhwa district,they said. On Saturday,a man and two of his grandchildren were killed by lightning in a field at Gopaldih village and a shepherd boy died at Sodhi village in Palamau district. Another woman died on Saturday night in Latehar districts Sagamo village.
