15 die in Bengal bus accident
COOCHBEHAR: At least 15 people were killed and 25 injured when a minibus in which they were travelling overturned and fell into a pond at Dewanhat in Coochbehar district on Sunday. 15 bodies were brought out from the submerged bus and taken to the morgues in MJN Hospital and Dinhata Sub-Divisional Hospital for postmortem. The deceased included a school girl Shweta Roy,studying in Class IX,locals claimed.
18 escape from juvenile home
CHENNAI: Eighteen boys,aged between 9 and 15,detained at a juvenile home here have escaped,police said on Sunday. The boys,who escaped on Saturday night,were involved in house break-ins and petty crimes. Following the incident,vigil has been tightened at the juvenile home,which houses more than 125 inmates.
Trader shot dead,assailant drowns
DARBHANGA: A trader was shot dead and his motorcyle snatched by an assailant,who was subsequently beaten up by locals and in the process fell into a pond and drowned at Samaila village in Bihars Darbhanga district,police said on Sunday. The assailant gunned down 25-year-old Amir Niazi,who was on his way home late on Saturday night. The assailant then tried to flee in the victims motorcycle but was chased and caught by the locals,city Superintendent of Police Ranjeet Kumar Mishra said. Later,his body was fished out and a sophisticated pistol,two live cartridges and a used one were found,Mishra said.
Two goods train drivers kidnapped
TEZPUR: Two goods train drivers were kidnapped by suspected NDFB militants from Gamani in Bhalukpung on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Sunday,prompting railway employees to block train services between the two states. The militants stopped the goods train carrying essentials of the Food Corporation of India,and abducted the two drivers,identified as Nirmal Chandra Borgohain and Abhijit Siring Phukan,at around 11.30 am.
Two persons run over by train in Rourkela
ROURKELA: Two persons,including a ten-year-old boy,were killed after they were run over by a train while crossing the railway track near a level crossing here on Sunday,police said. Though the level-crossing gate was closed,the two started crossing the track after a goods train had passed by,unaware that the Rourkela-Puri passenger train was fast approaching from the other direction,they said. The deceased were identified as Ranjan Kumar Sahu 10 and Rabindra Sethi 40.
