NEW DELHI: The government has cleared a Rs 2,176-crore deal to acquire amphibious assault vessels for the Navy that will replace ageing warships. The proposal,under which eight Landing Craft Utility will be built in the country over the next three years,has been cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security. Under the new production policy,all the warships will be constructed indigenously by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata.

Students in rally: HC wants ATR

KOLKATA: Expressing displeasure at students being taken to a political rally without informing parents,the Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the West Bengal education department to file an Action Taken Report ATR within a week on steps taken to prevent recurrence. Around 40 students of Sahapur Mathuranath Bidyapith school were on Thursday taken by DSO,the students8217; wing of SUCI Communist,to a rally protesting abolition of the pass-fail criteria up to Class VIII.

Furnish property details,top cops told

NEW DELHI: The Home Ministry has asked IPS officers,who have not furnished their property details,to do so by September 20. If the Immovable Property Returns IPRs for 2010 are not received,the names of the defaulting officers will be posted in the website of the ministry. Further,such defaulting officers would be denied vigilance clearance for empanelment to various levels at the Centre and for consideration to promotion, a Ministry notification said.

Soon,Twitter fans can tweet in Hindi

NEW YORK: Micro-blogging site Twitter is set to launch services in Hindi in the coming weeks. After launching Hindi,Filipino,Malay and Simplified and Traditional Chinese in the coming weeks,Twitter will support 17 different languages, said a company blog. Facebook already offers its services in Hindi and five other Indian languages Tamil,Malayalam,Punjabi,Telugu and Bengali.
