The Patiala administration on Monday granted the requisite no-objection certificate to Burail jail authorities in Chandigarh for the release on parole of a Sikh prisoner convicted for conspiring to assassinate former chief minister Beant Singh. If granted parole,Gurmeet Singh 41 will walk free after 18 years.
On November 4,Patiala had rejected Gurmeets parole plea.
Gurbaksh Singh, who has been on a fast at the Amb Sahib Gurdwara in Mohali for the last 40 days, wants Gurmeet,Lakhwinder Singh 42 and Shamsher Singh 44 also convicted in the Beant case and three others to be released from jails across the country.
While three had applied for pre-release and parole on December 20,authorities Monday moved the applications of the other two to the Patiala administration. We have given the NoC for the release of Gurmeet Singh to the Burail jail authorities, said Patiala SSP Hardayal Singh Mann.
When contacted, jail incharge Maneesh Chaudhary refused to divulge any details. It is a matter of judicial custody and I cannot comment. I cannot say if we have received the NoC or not, he said.
While the Punjab government is moving to ensure that the three are released on parole, doubts have emerged among Gurbakshs supporters regarding the role likely to be played by Chandigarh. Since the three are convicted of a crime committed in Chandigarh,Gurbakshs supporters wonder if jail authorities will put a spanner in their release. We know what the Punjab government is doing but have no idea what the Chandigarh administration is upto, said advocate Amar Singh Chahal.
