Tax system revamp

SEVERAL RELIEFS to the corporate sector and structural reforms in excise and customs duties are proposed in the long-term fiscal policy presented by the Union Finance Minister, V P Singh, to Parliament. While there will be no changes in the rates of personal income and wealth tax for the next five years, a review every two to three years will be carried out for lower tax slabs.

Historic Indo-Pak treaty

INDIA AND Pakistan have agreed to sign a peace and friendship treaty and abolish war from the Subcontinent. The decision was taken by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the Pakistan President Ziaul Haq when the two leaders met for a few hours.

BJP charge a damp squib

THE EXPOSURE by the president of the BJP’s Bombay unit, Ram Naik, of the Dindoshi land “scandal” has given a severe jolt to the credibility of the entire Opposition. The instant acceptance of Naik’s demand for a probe has generated resentment against Naik among his own partymen because the land deal was part of a settlement reached between the then Progressive Democratic Front government and the Dinshaw Trust in 1979.
