Two weeks after the West Bengal higher secondary examination results were announced, one marksheet is still lying with the Manikpara High School. Neither do the authorities expect the student who has cleared the exam to turn up any time soon.

For the student happens to be Bapi alias Manoj Mahato, the main accused in the Jnaneswari Express carnage, who was arrested from a Jamshedpur guesthouse on Sunday. It is after two failed attempts that 23-year-old Mahato has cleared his higher secondary.

The results came out on June 4,by which time Bapi had already gone into hiding after the May 28 Jnaneswari Express incident, leaving 148 dead. He was named as the principal accused for the first time on May 30 by Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh.

His marksheet shows Bapi has scored 40 marks in English,48 in Bengali,30 in History,38 in philosophy and 41 in Sanskrit. In 2009,Bapi had got compartment in English.

Bapi took admission in the Manikpara High School in 2005,when he was 18,according to school records. The date of birth recorded in the school is 3.1.87. His fathers name in the records is Sudhir Chandra and he is said to be a resident of village Rasua.

Since 2008 he has not been directly under the school and filed the higher secondary examination form as an external candidate. For this,he had to come to

school once or twice a year.

I remember he was an average student who was never involved in any mischief when he was a regular student, says Ashok Nayak, the Headmaster of Manikpara High School in Jhargram sub-division.

When he saw Bapis photo in the newspapers for the first time,Nayak felt he had seen him before, but couldnt immediately place him as in the school records,he is known as Manoj.

Even now,few teachers and students at the school are aware that Bapi is a student there.
