Galvanised by the unpredictable monsoons creating drought-like situation in various parts of the country,the government is likely to consider capping exports of wheat and continuing the ban on export of non-basmati rice to protect the country from any possible food crisis.
According to the agenda note,the Empowered Group of Ministers on drought,which is likely to meet soon,is expected to consider disallowing export of wheat by private traders barring export of 6.5 lakh tonne of wheat products already approved by the government. The EGoM would also deliberate on continuation of wheat import till further orders,and also on continuing the ban on export of non-basmati rice, informed sources said.
As on July 1,2009 the country had a wheat stock of 329.22 lakh tonne. While the expected procurement in Rabi marketing season this fiscal is about 252 lakh tonne,procurement as on July 1 was 248.11 lakh tonne. Further procurement of 2.9 lakh tonne is expected in the remaining period. Sources said expected off take under targeted PDS including adhoc,incentive based and equity based APL allocation from July 2009 to March 2010 had been pegged at 133.34 lakh tonne. The buffer stock including strategic reserve as on April 2010 is expected to be around 70 lakh tonne, sources said.
In case of rice,the stock as on July 1,2009 was 196.16 lakh tonne and its procurement expected during July to September 2009 is expected around 16.76 lakh tonne. The expected stock position with the government on October 1 this year after total off take is projected to be around 139.79 lakh tonne including a buffer stock of 72 lakh tonne.
