At Electronic Entertainment Expo,Sony returns with 8216;Final Fantasy8217; video game

New entry in long-running series was previously known as 'Final Fantasy Versus XIII'.

It8217;s a video game more than seven years in the making. Square Enix revealed Monday during Sony Computer Entertainment8217;s presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo that 8221;Final Fantasy XV8221; would finally see the light of day. The latest entry in the long-running role-playing series was previously known as 8221;Final Fantasy Versus XIII8221; and was first revealed at E3 way back in 2006.

What8217;s taking so long?

Tetsuya Nomura,Square Enix8217;s chief creative head,said technology had to catch up with his imagination. While the title was originally intended for the current-generation PlayStation 3,8221;Final Fantasy XV8221; will be available for Sony8217;s next-generation PlayStation 4,as well as Microsoft8217;s Xbox One.

8221;Several times,there were changes in engines that we used,8221; the Japanese game designer said through a translator Tuesday at Square Enix8217;s E3 booth. 8221;To make what I imagined in my mind on the current generation of consoles was very challenging. What you saw yesterday in the trailer was very difficult to create in the current generation of consoles.8221;

Nomura declined to elaborate on how the game will play,but footage shown at E3 suggests 8221;Final Fantasy XV8221; will trade the series8217; signature turn-based combat for quicker-paced action.

8221;The game was announced seven years ago,but the concept has never changed,8221; Nomura said.

The original 8221;Final Fantasy8221; was released in 1987 and has spawned dozens of sequels and spin-offs.
