Hydel power projects in the strategic areas of Arunachal Pradesh have been put on high priority,with the government planning to expedite clearances and provide special relief and rehabilitation packages for displaced people.
As the first step in this direction,a 2700 MW power project in the Siang basin has been given the initial go-ahead. The project,to be built by the JP Group,is one of the three with a total capacity of 11,000 MW that have been identified by the Arunachal Pradesh government in the Siang basin. A Terms of Reference has been issued to the JP Group and it has been asked to prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment report at the earliest.
The Water Resources Ministry has estimated that the Siang basin the name of Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh has a generation potential of 20,000 MW and that it was in the strategic interests of India to exploit as much of it as possible.
This is part of the effort of the Centre to have as much infrastructure presence and government footprint in the border areas of Arunachal Pradesh as possible. As a result,all power projects,roads and electrification projects are being put on fast-track,sources said.
The government has told the state that it was ready to offer attractive relief and rehabilitation packages and provide additional incentives to the state in its effort to support new infrastructure. The upcoming infrastructure projects are to be treated as national projects,sources said.
