India decided on Thursday to send Vice-President Hamid Ansari instead of External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid for the inauguration ceremony of new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on August 4.
This is being seen as a positive development by Iranian officials, since it is an upgrade in the status of the dignitary. New Delhi took this decision after taking into consideration that Pakistan and Iran are being represented by their Presidents.
The Vice-President will be travelling to Tehran to attend the ceremony, official sources said on Thursday.
Rouhani won a landslide victory in the June 14 presidential election. He succeeds President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran has sent invitations to world leaders to attend Rouhanis inauguration.
