In their first formal meeting after last months Ramlila Maidan protest in Delhi,Anna Hazare and his core group today decided that the activist will write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on electoral reforms and performance audit of MPs.
Team Anna also said it was going to include one more provision in the Jan Lokpal Bill that if socially and economically backward people are denied their rights and their work delayed, the official concerned will have to pay more penalty.
Urging people to keep an eye on Parliament and their MPs,Hazare said: Make a list of MPs who oppose Jan Lokpal in Parliament or try to dilute its provisions and protest in front of their houses. Remember them and teach them a lesson when they come asking for votes next time, he said.
It was the first time that the top members of Team Anna, including Arvind Kejriwal,Prashant Bhushan,Santosh Hegde,Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia, met at Hazares village Ralegan Siddhi following the successful Delhi protest. Medha Patkar also attended the meeting.
Anna Hazare will be writing to the Prime Minister seeking his views on the annual performance audit of MPs,right to reject, right to recall and the land acquisition Bill, Kejriwal told a press conference at the end of the first day of the two-day meeting.
Asked what their response would be if the PM does not reply,Kejriwal said: Let us write the letter first.
Asked how they would identify the socially and economically backward as regards their new provision for penalising officers,Kejriwal contested: It is easily definable and practically identifiable and there wouldnt be any issues in determining such a person.
On the issue of right to reject and recall,Team Anna members will also meet Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi soon.
Turning their attention to the land acquisition Bill,Kejriwal said Hazare will ask the PM whether the planned legislation would have provisions to ensure that the nod of gram sabhas is taken before acquiring land.
Bedi said no one can attribute a motive to Hazare except national interest. He does not have a hidden agenda.
We have to see if each of the 31 members of the Standing Committee of Parliament looking into the Lokpal speak for the common man or heed their respective party high commands whose interests lie elsewhere, she added.
Dont support any party,says Kejriwal
Asked about BJP leader L K Advanis announcement of a country-wide yatra against corruption,Arvind Kejriwal said: Desh ko yatra ki nahin strong Lokpal Bill ki zaroorat hai. The party whose members in Standing Committee vote in favour of strong provisions of Jan Lokpal will prove that they are against corruption. Such a party would get overwhelming response in the next elections. He added that there appeared to be some misunderstanding. We are not supporting any political party. Asked about Advanis yatra,Kiran Bedi, however, said: We will support anybody who supports our cause. There is no question of party in this.
