Alternative front should be based on CMP: Buddhadeb

Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who is also a CPM politburo member,Saturday said that the call for formation of a third front is insignificant unless it has a common minimum programme of action by the constituent parties.

The third front idea will not carry any significance until it has a common minimum programme. We are working on the common minimum programme and a third front as well. We can build an alternative to the BJP and Congress only if we have a strong common minimum programme, he said.

Bhattacharjee was speaking at a function to mark the birth anniversary of Anil Biswas. The remarks came amid speculation over the formation of a federal front,a move initiated by rival Trinamool Congress chief and CM Mamata Banerjee. The CPM has become active and initiated a parallel move for formation of a third front after Mamata called for all the regional parties to form a federal front to dislodge the UPA in the Lok Sabha elections.

Referring to Mamatas proposal for federal front,Bhattacharjee said,This cannot be an alternative.
