After five hours of talks between U S Attorney General Eric Holder and Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam in Washington on Tuesday,India has been assured direct access to question Lashkar operative David Coleman Headley as early as next week.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the Solicitor General said he will brief Home Minister P Chidambaram after which a lot of preparatory work has to be done on a “high-level” interrogation team and the structure and range of questions to be covered.

Subramaniam said: “All roadblocks have been overcome and no more paperwork needs to be done. Our team will need to have one round of preliminary discussions, maybe in Washington, and after that they will simply go across (to question Headley).”

He said that, ideally,a senior law officer will accompany the investigation team to the US. He said that he had carried with him the bulk of the investigation on the case done by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). “What I think impressed them was that we had a complete understanding of US laws and all the parameters which mutual legal cooperation could cover…Given the mindset of David Headley and the fact that he has a known aversion to being put through an Indian investigation, the issue of direct access has to be handled with utmost sensitivity and secrecy.”
