Accusing Narendra Modi government of committing large-scale irregularities in preparing the voter list in Gujarat, the Congress on Friday demanded from the Election Commission to investigate into the scam and also defer any future elections until electoral rolls are rectified.
The ruling party at the Centre said it had found at least 30 lakh bogus voters in the electoral rolls. State officials under the supervision of the political leadership did the job of preparing the voters list. We want to categorically state that the BJP government in the state and the Chief Minister committed these irregularities in the electoral rolls, AICC spokesman Manish Tewari said at a press briefing here. He was flanked by Gujarat PCC chief Siddharth Patel and CLP leader Shaktisinh Gohil.
Earlier,a Congress delegation had met Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla to lodge a complaint on the issue. They demanded that the EC should immediately send a team to the state to investigate into the matter. Patel said the party could also approach the court on this issue.
Congress leaders alleged that in every Assembly segment,8,000 to 15,000 voters were fake and they could make a difference between victory and defeat. Patel claimed that one EPIC card has been used multiple times, the number of one EPIC card of one constituency has been used in some other constituency and several names have been listed on the same address.
We gave all details to the CEC with proof, Patel said adding that total 30 lakh voters were illegally registered in the state. In 2009 Lok Sabha elections, vote difference between the BJP and Congress was 5.49 lakh in all the 26 Lok Sabha constituencies, said the PCC chief.
It is a conspiracy. The BJP or Modi could otherwise win neither in the name of Hindutva nor in the name of development, said Gohil.
BJP president doesnt deserve reply: Cong
Taking a dig at BJP president Nitin Gadkari,Tewari on Friday said his party would not react to his remarks about Congress president Sonia Gandhis silence because the Opposition leader did not have the political stature. Nitin Gadkari is a respected person and also the president of the BJP. But we do not think that he has the political stature that we reply to him from this podium, said Tewari at a press briefing here.
