Waterpolo team set for more Asian challenge

This is one low key sport, as far as India is concerned, with the potential of an international medal. Not that this sport is counted among those that fetch big headlines, but Indian waterpolo players won bronze in the 2005 Asian invitational tournament in Hong Kong.

It is that time of year when competition has heated up again, with more events 8212; the Hong Kong Asian waterpolo championship and then the South Asian Swimming and waterpolo meet in the first week of September in Islamabad 8212; coming up.

Practice is on for the 17 campers on at the SAI Gandhinagar pool 8211; it started on July 23 and concludes on August 17 8212; and they will leave for Delhi the same day.

The final list of 13 will decided after a meeting, on August 2, between the president and secretary of Swimming Federation of India, Government of India nominee Arun Shah, SAI nominee Bula Chowdhury and chief swimming coach swimming Pradeep Kumar.

The stars among the campers are Sree Kumar, Martin Joseph, A G VIjay Kumar, Harmender Singh, S Jayan and Gopa Kumar. Sree Kumar is a centre forward, Martin Joseph a forward both from Services, A G Vijay Kumar centre forward from Railways, Harmender Singh, centre forward from Punajb Police, S Jayan, goalkeeper from Railways and Gopa Kumar, forward from CRPF.

Indian waterpolo coach Bhaskar Nagarkatti laid stress on the camp, with players selected from the last nationals in Bangalore in September and from the National Games held in February in Assam.

Nagarkatti who has been with the team for quite sometime now feels: 8220;Kerala is the only state where sports is being promoted and that is why most players are from Kerala.8221; Of course, the grey no-sponsor area remains undefined.
