NEW DELHI, July 29: Indian Airlines (North Zone) defeated Delhi Vidyut Board 6-1 in the Delhi Hockey Association Institutional League at the Shivaji Stadium here today.

The star-studded Airlines team made its intentions very clear right at the start and kept swarming the DVB defence for most part of the game. Though they managed to bang in half a dozen goals, three in each half, they could have added a few more to their tally. But unfortunately, the Airlines forwards took the game lightly and seemed content with the scoreline.

On the other hand, DVB looked a hapless team and failed to protect their goalkeeper who was left to fend for himself as the Airlines onslaught continued unabated. Their only consolation was that a defence lapse on the part of Airlines enabled to pull one back towards the close when centre-forward Subhash Saini struck.

By the breather, Airlines had taken an unassailable lead of three goals without any reply from their opponents. In the seventh minute of the game, Sanjay Bhatia put Airlines ahead with a crisp shot. But it was inside-right Virender Singh who shone on this day with five goals, including a hat-trick, to his credit.

Soon, the Airlines consolidated their position when Virender banged in two goals within nine minutes. But after that the Airlines played for the interval and did not seem interested in making most of some chances.

On resumption, Virender came back strongly to add three more goals to his tally of two scored in the first half. Ten minutes into the second half, Virender collected a long ball and beat the goalkeeper for his third goal. And by the 52nd minute, he struck twice to complete a hat-trick.
