Residents of Krishnapur village in West Midnapore district detained five policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector, alleging that they had looted a home on the pretext of conducting a raid.

According to villagers, five policemen from the Goghat police station in Hooghly, accompanied with some locals, broke into the house of Inayat Ali on the night of December 26.

They looted Rs 40,000 in cash and gold ornaments, they alleged.

According to Anwara Khatun, who was present in the house, the policemen also molested her and two other girls in the house.

The area is on the border of Hooghly and West Midnapore districts.

While the policemen were trying to flee from the scene, villagers managed to stop the police van. Some of the alleged accomplices of the police managed to escape on their motorbikes.

The policemen refuted the allegations and said they were on their duty while they raided the house.

Later in the day, a huge contingent of policemen from Chandrakona, Goghat police stations and DSP Arnab Ghosh reached the spot and assured the villagers that necessary steps would be taken against the policemen if they are found guilty.
