As India went into the fifth ODI against Sri Lanka to check their bench strength, there was one area that the hosts were head and shoulders above their opponents.

While the Sri Lankans misfielded, spilled catches and repeatedly missed the stumps, the Indians almost did everything right. India might have lost the game but their ground work was very positive.

One Jayasuriya over virtually underlined the dismal state the Lankans are currently on. He bowled three wides and the fielders gave three extra runs due to misfielding and overthrows.

Zoysa bowled one no ball and a wide when he was on a hat-trick. Muralithran was guilty of commiting the maximum number of errors and he too started his bowling with a wide down the leg-side.

In contrast, India’s fielding came as a breadth of fresh air. JP Yadav’s direct hit to run out Mahela Jayawerdene was the high point of their effort.

The Indians also managed to get as many as six run out decisions referred to the third umpire and that speaks volumes of how well this lot has fielded today.
