BANGALORE, OCT 26: Congress nominee M Venkatappa was on Tuesday unanimously elected the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Chief Minister S M Krishna moved the motion proposing Venkatappa8217;s name for the Speaker8217;s post which Home Minister M Mallikarjuna Kharge seconded.Protem Speaker Azeez Sait took up the motion and put it to vote and the House approved it unanimously.

Following the carrying of the first motion, the other two motions seeking Venkatappa8217;s election as the presiding officer of the Lower House, were not taken up.

Krishna thanked the Opposition for its cooperation in facilitating Venkatappa8217;s unanimous election as Speaker.

He congratulated Venkatappa on his election and said he was confident that the newly-elected speaker, who hailed from a freedom fighters8217; family and had rich experience as Legislative Council chairman, would take the proceedings of the House to a great heights.

Krishna said the State Legislative Assembly had the distinction of being one of best StateAssemblies in the country and wanted the new Speaker to uphold its dignity.
