PUNE, Oct 2: University of Pune Vice-Chancellor Arun Nigvekar said here today that the university would soon chalk out a programme to make the services of medical graduates available for the blind.

Speaking at the 46th foundation day of the Poona Blind Men8217;s Association, Dr Nigavekar said the PBMA work over decades had been astounding. He felicitated PBMA founder president T S Bamankar on his 75th birthday. Dr Rajendra Vyas, secretary general of the National Association for the Blind, presided over the function.

The first T.S. Bamankar award was presented by Dr. Nigavekar to Mrs Rehmut Fazalbhoy for her exemplary work for the handicapped and the blind over the past four decades. Dr Vyas inaugurated the share and care Braille press unit at the institution. Dr B D Pallonji award was presented to A M Pardeshi, employment officer of PBMA.

Dr Nigavekar said more programmes for the blind could be planned by the PBMA and the continuing education department. Fazalbhoy expressed gratitude for the support and said she enjoyed working for the handicapped.

Dr Nigavekar felicitated Col Dr M Deshpande and his team for conducting 2000 cataract operations last year. Executive director N. Pandya welcomed the gathering and Kishore Vora proposed a vote of thanks.
