
Dispute over tazia claims one life
A 25-year-old youth was stabbed to death in a scuffle between members of a tazia procession in Chhotaudepur town on Thursday. Police said the dispute arose when Jahid Mirza alleged that the accused, Munna Sheikh, Sajid Ajmeri, Rahi Sheikh and Safaro alias Nazar, deliberately pushed him. This led to the scuffle, in which Mirza was stabbed to death. All the accused are absconding.
AIDS workshop
The Faculty of Social Work, M S University in collaboration with the State AIDS Cell, Gandhinagar, funded by NACO: Counselling Project, Tata Institute of Social Sciences TISS Mumbai, will organise a grassroot level workers8217; workshop on counselling in HIV/AIDS from May 8 to 10. Training will be given by Dr G K Vankar, Dr Aruna Khasgiwala and Dr Deepak Solanki under the guidance of Vineeta Chitle, Senior Project Advisor, NACO, Mumbai. About 30 grassroot level workers from governmental and non-governmental institutions in Vadodara and Bharuch districts will participate in the workshop.
Buddha Purnima
The Trilokya Buddha Maha Sangha Sahayak Gana has organised a special religious programme on May 11 on the occasion of Buddha Purnima at the Abbas Hall, Sardar Bhawan between 9 am to 7 pm. The programme will commence with offering of flowers to Lord Buddha8217;s statue in Jubilee Garden and will conclude in the evening by circling the garden holding burning candles and chanting Buddha Vandana.
Appeal for help
Vadodara M P Jayaben Thakkar and city Congress chief Ashwin Shah have appealed citizens to extend help to 35-year-old Giriraj M Bhatt, a former commercial pilot, suffering from blood cancer. Help should be forwarded to C-59, Vrindavan Park Society, near Super Bakery, Ajwa Road, Vadodara 8211; 390 019. Alvi Co-operative Bank, Ajwa has agreed to accept the amount on behalf of Bhatt.
Loan mela
Citibank and Daewoo Motors have organised a test drive-cum-loan mela for Cielo car in the city on Thursday and Friday at the Meghdhanush Building, Race Course between 10 am and 7 pm. Citibank offers car loans at low interest rates, calculating it on a reducing balance method.
Taekwondo camp
The Gujarat State Amateur Taekwondo Association, recognised by the Gujarat State Sports Council, will organise a vacation Taekwondo camp from May 10 to June 9 at the Jeevan Sadhana School, Navi Dharti, Golwad. The camp will be held in groups. Students interested in learning this art of self-defence should contact Chief Coach, Sudesh Kokate, at the school between 8 and 11 am for details.
Booth for blind
SURAT: An STD/PCO booth operated by the blind has come up at the central bus depot. Andhjan Shikshan Mandal and Surat branch of the National Association for Blind, which is involved in welfare, rehabilitation and employment-oriented activities for the blind, have helped the visually handicapped for a similar venture in Olpad, Bardoli and Vyara towns.
