Chandubhai Deskmukh dies at 77
Veteran state BJP leader and sitting MP from Bharuch Chandubhai Deshmukh expired on Sunday at 6.30 pm, following a respiratory arrest at a Vadodara hospital. He was 77 and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. State BJP leaders including Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel condoled his death.
Deshmukh, who had been admitted to the Bhailal Amin Hospital on June 11 after his health deteriorated, had been on artificial respiration for the last three days. He had had been suffering from idiopathic pulmonary disorders for quite some time. His last rites will be performed in his native Rampura village near Rajpipla, according to family sources.
GEB concession
The Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) will give 25 per cent concession to domestic consumers using less than 100 units in a month.
According to an official release issued here recently, the concession, to come into force from April 1, 1998, will be calculated after deducting the meter rent. The Board has also asked consumers, who have not paid the outstanding bills upto April 1, 1998, to make the payment till July 31, 1998 for availing the benefit.
Arrested
The Wadi police on Sunday arrested 33 people in connection with the killing of State general secretary of the BJP’s Minority Morcha Mahesh Nadia. Wadi police inspector I D Upadhyaya told Express Newsline that they were, however, released after interrogation on the orders of the executive magistrate.
Students’ threat
Members of the M S University students’ union, alleging that the university authorities had failed to give an explanation for charging developmental fees, have threatened to launch an agitation and declare the university closed on Monday. In a statement they pointed out that charging Rs 250 from one section and Rs 500 from another was unacceptable. The students also warned of resorting to violence if they were not given a convincing explanation.
Gaekwad warns
Holding high-level corruption in the BJP-government at Gandhinagar responsible for the hike in edible oil prices, former member of Parliament Satyajitsinh Gaekwad on Friday threatened to continue his agitation. At a meeting with Oil Dealers Association of Baroda here, Gaekwad said that even the Rs 4 reduction in the price at the behest of Civil Supply Minister Jaspal Singh was an eye-wash. He added that citizens were still paying more for edible oil as the Vadodara Municipal Corporation was charging 1 per cent octroi unlike other corporations which charged 30 naya paisa. “Therefore, the supply of edible oil had nosedived following decrease in consumption,” he said.
IGNOU exams
The Baroda Study centre of the Indira Gandhi National Open University Study Centre will conduct computer practicals for the first semester on July 4. Examinations for SY BCA, and FY MCA will also be held on the same day. The examinations will be held at the Department of Applied Mathematics, Faculty of Technology and Engineering at 9 am.
