The US Embassy is planning to gear up the visa processing capacity across India next year. Apart from this, the embassy also has plans to set up a consulate with an investment of 100 million in Mumbai and a new consulate in Hyderabad.

The US embassy has issued about 7.5 lakh temporary visas during the financial year ending September 30, 2008. Two years ago, it had issued 4.5 lakh visas only.

Peter G Kaestner, minister-counselor for Consular Affairs and Consul General, US Embassy, said the embassy is focussed on reducing the backlog time to 14 days from the existing six months wait.

Kaestner said the US was extremely keen to make its visa proceedings easier for students who want to study there. He added that student visa applications were going up by 20 -25 per cent every year and in a survey done in 2007, it was seen that India had sent the maximum number of foreign students to the US.
