Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday announced that jails in the state would be brought under the Home Department. The changes introduced by the Government come close on the heels of clashes reported from the Sultanpur Jail. Many objectionable material have also been seized from within various jail premises during search operations recently.

The Principal Secretary (Home) will hold additional charge of jails, Mayawati said. IPS officers would be appointed as DIG Jail and would supervise jails under them. Three additional posts have been created for this purpose and three IPS officers with a clean image have already been appointed, she said. The CM also said jails are the appropriate place for criminals. She also reminded how she had sent one of her own men to jail after he was found indulging in criminal activities.
