
In this world of increasing competition, extra homework and evaluation tests, where does a child go to fulfil his creativity? Filling this gap which is creeping into the modern child8217;s lifestyle is Bal Bhavan. This autonomous institution was set up in 1956 under our then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, Mrs Indira Gandhi being its first chairperson. This institution was formed for the sole purpose of enhancing creativity among children.
Bal Bhavan offers a wide range of activities for kids to pursue in various fields such as science, literary, creative arts, performing arts, photography, physical activities and audio-visual. There are 71 Bal Bhavans across the country all affiliated to the central Bal Bhavan in Delhi, as extension projects, there are 52 Bal Bhavan Kendras in far-flung areas of Delhi for children who cannot reach the main campus, there is also a rural chapter in Mandi village near Mehrauli to cater to the needs of children from the surrounding areas.
There is also an in-house aviary, aquarium and museum which is open to all. There is also a National Bal Shree award scheme which honours the creative children of India, with awards being presented by the President, every children8217;s day in fields as creative performance, creative arts, creative scientific innovations and creative writing.
Dr Madhu Pant, director, Bal Bhavan also plans to start educational and innovative games as a new activity. The membership fee is Rs 25 for kids aged 5-14 and Rs 40 for older children from 14-16. In case a child is unable to pay the fee is not charged. Bal Bhavan also works closely with various NGO8217;s for interacting with children who are socially, emotionally, mentally or physically challenged. Bal Bhavan also helps in giving slum children some basic vocational training, which helps them get jobs. All the exercises are an all year round facility and the details of the immediate programmes can be obtained from the main Bal Bhavan campus at 1, Kotla Road, Delhi. The institute is open from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm on all days except Sundays, Mondays and all gazetted holidays.
