UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari arrived in New Delhi on a two-day visit on Wednesday. His visit comes days after India and Britain expressed their strong support to the ongoing good offices of the UN Secretary General and shared hope that he will be able to visit Myanmar again at the earliest.

On Wednesday, Gambari had a luncheon meeting with Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon to discuss the latest situation on Myanmar. According to sources, he also called on Vice President Hamid Ansari.

This is his second visit to India and meetings with India’s foreign policy establishment show India’s crucial role and interest in restoring democracy in Myanmar. It is believed Gambari’s discussions with the Indian foreign policy establishment is crucial as both the countries are involved in key projects like the Kaladan multimodal project. Once completed, this project will open up a route through the port town of Sittwe in Myanmar, giving an access to Northeast India without having to involve Bangladesh. Also, Myanmar has in recent years helped Indian Army contain insurgency in its N-E states by cracking down on anti-India rebel camps in Myanmar.
