Claim to Fame: Picasso8217;s mural, inspired by the 1937 aerial bombing on a Basque village in northern Spain, was commissioned for the Spanish Pavilion at that year8217;s World8217;s Fair. He wouldn8217;t allow the mural to bec displayed in Spain while Fascist leader Francisco Franco ruled; it has been at the Reina Sofia since 1992 now.

Claim to Fame: A kiss isn8217;t just a kiss when this secessionist artist is involved: It8217;s a sparkling silver-and-gold-leaf affair on canvas. A tender touch and the woman8217;s casually exposed shoulder speak of the passion behind this chaste buss on the cheek.

Johannes Vermeer8217;s Girl With a Pearl Earring
Where: The Hague, at Mauritshuis
Claim to Fame: A 17th-century peasant maid modelled for this painting with the turned head, blue-and-gold turban and haunting eyes that centuries later inspired a novel, which in turn spawned a movie. A visit may reveal the small brush hairs supposedly trapped in the pigment.

Claim to Fame: Part of this painting8212;the skyward-looking putti, or cherubs8212;has appeared on everything from posters to postcards, sometimes naughtily dangling cigarettes. They8217;re just a smidge of the original, which features a cloud-supported Mary, Baby Jesus and saints Sixtus and Barbara.

Claim to Fame: Surrealist duality from the man who brought us floating bowler hats and the pipe that wasn8217;t. Clouds float in a daytime sky over a dark scene illuminated by a lamp post. This version of the oft-painted work is supposedly the most complete.
