The Winter session of Parliament ended on Friday. Both the Houses had 17 sittings each since November 15. The Rajya Sabha sat for 84 hours and the Lok Sabha for 90 hours. Disruptions caused by Nandigram, UP blasts, AIIMS Bill and the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary meant a loss of 18 hours for RS and 20 hours for LS. Attendance was low in both Houses on the last day, as many MPs had left for home states. Young MPs were no different

Rajya Sabha

Supriya Sule (NCP), Kanimozhi (DMK), Jay Panda (BJD) have gone back to their respective states. Panda therefore even missed a starred question listed jointly with Pramila Bohidar—the first of the day—to the Health Minister. The question was whether the Government had any action plan to “create awareness among the general public about the immense benefits of breast feeding”.

LOK Sabha

Deepender Hooda (Cong): Actively participated in the proceedings during Question Hour. Asked a Supplementary question from the Power Minister drawing his attention to the consumption of power in Punjab and Haryana, 50 per cent of which was used for irrigation. He wanted to know whether the Government will consider giving additional power to these states

Naveen Jindal (Cong): Asked a Supplementary question. Wanted to know from the Power Minister about the steps being taken to reduce transmission and distribution losses

Dushyant Singh (BJP): Present during the Question Hour . Eagerly listened to the debate

Rahul Gandhi, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora, Sandeep Dikshit and Jitin Prasada (Cong) were not present in the House. Sachin Pilot is campaigning for the Congress in Himachal Pradesh

Manvendra Singh (BJP) was reportedly in the House, later went out of town

Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), Omar Abdullah (NC) were not seen in the House

Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Sukhbir Singh Badal (SAD), Shamik Lahiri (CPI-M) were away in their respective constituencies

House Watch

Out of the eight starred questions taken up in the Lok Sabha on Friday, two could not be answered due to the absence of the members who had asked them.

Q. No. 323 Punnu Lal Mohale (BJP): Had sought to know from the Rural Development Minister about the pending proposals from various states under Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana

Q. No. 326 Ramdas Athawale RPI(A): He had sought to know from the Rural Development Minister whether the Government has any mechanism to monitor the expenditure of the district rural development agencies.
