
The toy train accident between Matheran and Neral could have been averted had the gateman been informed about the train running behind schedule, reveals a source from Neral station.
The toy train collided with a truck at a level crossing between Matheran and Neral on December 20 damaging the headlights and other parts of the train.
A staff at Neral station said that had the engineering department informed the gateman about the train running late, the accident could have been avoided.
He also said that the gateman was at duty till 5 pm and the accident occurred at 7. If he knew that the train was late he could have stayed back, said the source.
When contacted, S Mudgerikar, chief public relation officer, Central Railway, said, 8220;At this stage, nothing can be said. The enquiry is going on in the case and unless it8217;s over we cannot comment. Also, CR has lodged an FIR against the driver and cleaner of the truck.8221;
Morcha by gangmen
On December 27, gangmen held a morcha supported by National Railway Majdoor Union NRMU against the section engineer of Neral- Matheran section. They demanded that the Railways should concentrate more on safety issues on this section.
