
Top cops on summer holiday
Even as Mumbai police prepares to renew its fight against the underworld, a few of its top officers have left for cooler climes to escape rising temperatures in the city. The additional commissioner of police north-west, Dr Satyapal Singh, has gone on a leave of fifteen days.
The north-west region comprises the western suburbs and the murder of Salim Kurla and the killing of Copper Chimney chief steward, Keith Rodrigues, had taken place here. Singh has handed over charge to additional commissioner of police, Shiv Prasad Singh Yadav, who is also looking after city traffic. Additional commissioner of police south, K Subramaniam, too is on a month-long leave.
In last ten days his region has been witness to the killings of former customs officers, Farooq Batatawala and Dawood aide Salim Passport, not to mention the escape of Feroz Konkani from the J J Hospital. The police have not been able to make any breakthrough in the cases. Subramaniam8217;s deputy, the deputycommissioner of police zone-I, Ashok Dhameja, too is on leave. Dhameja, however, went on leave before the escape of Konkani and Passport8217;s murder. Currently, DCP Kiran Shelar of the special branch-I CID, security is in charge of zone-I, while the additional commissioner of police crime, Yadavrao Chindarao Pawar, is looking after Subramaniam8217;s responsibilities. The crime branch is handicapped in the absence of DCP detection K L Prasad. He is away for 20 days.
