At least 177 people lost their lives due to the heavy rains that lashed Tamil Nadu last week while eight lakh people are staying in relief camps, the government said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the first meeting of the group of ministers GoM formed to coordinate relief work was held on Tuesday.

The group, headed by Local Administration Minister M K Stalin, reviewed relief work being undertaken in the affected areas, an official release said. More than 2,700 cattle had also perished in the heavy rains and floods.

Over 7.7 lakh hectare of crops have been submerged and officials have been asked to estimate the loss.

The government was giving Rs 2,000 and 10 kg of rice to those persons who had lost their property in the deluge.

The GoM also suggested a long-term plan to effectively prevent flooding in case of heavy rains, the release said.
