
PATIALA, MARCH 8: Teaching work at the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology TIET was disrupted today and the classrooms and the laboratories wore a deserted look as protesting students of the institute boycotted classes on the first day of their two-day strike.
The protesting students held a rally on the campus of the institute in the morning wherein student leaders including Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi, Rajesh Bansal and Paramjit Singh deplored the alleged apathetic attitude of the management towards their demands.
Their demands include introduction of supplementary examination system in the institute on the pattern of Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, and the Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar; revoking of the decision of the institute to scrap the option of summer semester system; permission to have at least six subjects normal workload in a semester to students having backlog courses; and constitution of a students8217; union in the institute so that representatives of students can be party to the decisions taken concerning the students.
Later, the students staged a protest march to the residence of the Deputy Commissioner where they had planned to submit a memorandum listing their demands to him. Since the Deputy Commissioner was said to be out of town, they dispersed peacefully and decided to take out another protest march tomorrow.
