Three testify in ex-MLA8217;s murder case

CHANDIGARH, MAY 31: Former Ropar MLA Bachittar Singh8217;s assassination case today came up in the court of UT District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bedi for further recording of evidence.

Among the three witnesses present today were Constable Jaspal Singh, Patwari Prem Singh and former sarpanch of village Basian Brahmana, Kuldip Siingh.

Jaspal Singh stated that on December 2, 1996, he was posted as a constable at Kharar. At about 12.30 am, he was given a special report to be delivered to the Ilaqa Magistrate and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ropar. He stated that he delivered the same. Today he also admitted to the suggestion that the Ilaqa Magistrate made an endorsement regarding the receipt of this FIR. Retired patwari Prem Singh today stated that he had prepared scale report of the place where the accident had occurred.

The, then sarpanch of village Basian Brahmana stated that on December 4, 1996, accused Jugraj and Kulwinder had come to him and told him that way back in 1992, Bachittar Singh8217;s son had killed his father8217;s brother. He had also said that he was too young at that time but he had decided to take revenge. The sarpanch added that the two admitted in front of him that they had murdered Bachittar Singh.

Cross-examination of the witnesses has been deferred till tomorrow. It may be recalled that Bachittar Singh had allegedly been killed on December 1, 1996 on the Kharar-Landran road while he was returning from a seminar. Besides Jugraj, those facing trial are Kulwinder Singh, Kuljeet Singh and Inderpreet Singh. Trial has also been initiated against Gurdeep Singh, the alleged owner of the gun used in the crime.
