NEW DELHI, DEC 15: Three officials at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here have been suspended in connection with the death of a girl in an escalator accident, the Government said on Wednesday even as it came under scathing attack from the Opposition for quot;suppressingquot; facts and a quot;delayedquot; response.
When Minister of State for Civil Aviation Chaman Lal Gupta made a statement in Lok Sabha, Priyaranjan Dasmunshi Congress accused him of making the statement quot;after 48 hours of the accidentquot;.
In response to Dasmunshi8217;s questions, Gupta said three airport officials had been suspended after a preliminary inquiry.
At this, Dasmunshi, CPI-M leader Basudeb Acharia and several others lashed out at the Minister for not mentioning the suspension aspect in his statement and said this was a matter of privilege as Gupta had quot;suppressed factsquot; on the follow-up action.
Dasmunshi also attacked the Government for appointing a probe by officers of the Airport Authority of India, saying these officials should notinquire into the incident as they themselves were primarily responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and management of airports.
Gupta said the seven-year-old girl, Jyotsna, died after her head got crushed by the moving escalator. quot;It appears that a metal plate at the foot of the escalator at the last step was yanked out by the force applied by the passenger whose bag8217;s strap had got stuck. As a result, a gap opened up in the flooring of the escalator, quot; he said.
