
VADODARA, May 2: Three residents of Baska village of Haalol taluka, Panchmahals district, have been detained for interrogation in connection with the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad activist and temple priest Lakhangiri Maharaj of Anandpura village.
Ruling out the robbery motive, since several valubles had survived the murder, the police said they were considering several alternatives, including a land dispute and religious differences among priests.
Sources said that the missing papers of a land deal recently concluded by the deceased was the basis of the police suspicion against the three detained. The priest had apparently bought the land from them. The murdered priest also had a long-standing dispute with the priests of the Madi Madar temple in Haalol taluka and, subsequently, set up an independent temple in Anandpura village with his devotees8217; help, and built a house for himself. His success may have irked his opponents and provoked them to take this step, police sources said.
Police sub-inspector C S Pawar, who is investigating the case, told Express Newsline over the phone that he had called in experts from Ahmedabad to lift fingerprints from the scene of the crime.
